What is it about?

In this project in Nigeria, pregnant women were given cell phones and their services were generally improved. Data from the intervention area were compared to data from a neighbouring area. The pregnant women in the intervention area used more primary health services, but the incidences of major pregnancy related illnesses were not different in the two areas.

Why is it important?

Pregnant women in many areas have insufficient health services, which contributes to unneccesary deaths among pregnant women and newborns. We need to improve services and giving out free cell phones so that the pregnant women can get help might help some.

Perspectives

More needs to be done to address maternal and neonatal illnesses in developing countries. Technologies such as cell phones might contribute in this respect.
