Cervical spine disc protrusion as a cause of diaphragmatic paralysis. A broad differential diagnosis of this paralysis and its investigation are discussed.

Why is it important?

Cervical disc disease is quite common, however it is not formally recognized as a possible cause of paralysis of the diaphragm. This may tip the patient into respiratory failure if other diseases affecting the respiratory system are present

Perspectives

the intention is to draw attention to his common limitation to respiratory function which is frequently not taken into consideration. Support with non invasive ventilation is a viable options for such patients with respiratory failure
