What is it about?

Viral pneumonia is more prevalent than often thought and the chances of finding a virus are higher in patients with lower respiratory tract (lung) sampling. Patients with viral and bacterial pneumonia were found to be twice as likely to die from their infection. A viral pneumonia later leading to a severe bacterial pneumonia is a known pattern of infection. Future research may be helpful to find out if the time between these two infections (weeks, days, or both infections starting at the same time) could predict the severity of the infection.
