What is it about?
We have analysed the genes and proteins in the lungs of people suffering from severe asthma, particularly those who were previously smokers and those who are currently smoking. Those who were currently smoking could be distinguished from those who were previously smokers by having different amounts of proteins measured in the sputum. These proteins are linked to inflammation with neutrophils and to the protective functioning of the surface lining cells of the airway tubes.
