What is it about?

Entrepreneurial success hinges on effective mentoring. However, few researchers have explored and documented approaches to mentoring artists with entrepreneurial ambitions. In this study, I asked experts in the field of arts entrepreneurship to participate in a multiphase Delphi procedure to generate consensus on the best practices for mentoring entrepreneurial artists. I organized the findings into four categories: (a) attributes of effective mentors, (b) suggested learning outcomes, (c) questions to ask mentees, and (d) recommended learning activities that lead to the aforementioned outcomes.

Why is it important?

To my knowledge, this was the first attempt to systematically codify different aspects of arts entrepreneurship mentoring. The findings suggested a primary focus on value creation and customer/audience discovery; perhaps surprisingly, deep knowledge of the arts/cultural sector did not emerge as an essential attribute of an effective mentor.

Perspectives

It is my hope that the findings of this study might serve as a "handbook" for those mentoring artists seeking to become more entrepreneurial. Hopefully this work will serve as a springboard for further discussion of mentoring as an essential aspect of teaching and learning entrepreneurial skills.
