What is it about?

This Northwestern University and UCLA study found for the first time that young people who are high on the personality trait of neuroticism are are at elevated risk to subsequently develop both anxiety and depression disorders. We also found for the first time that neuroticism prospectively predicts mood and anxiety disorders more strongly than substance use disorders.

Why is it important?

These results open the possibility of identifying young people who are at risk for both anxiety and depression so that we might prevent both disorders.

Perspectives

It’s been my professional dream to be able to prevent the development of anxiety disorders and depression in people who would have otherwise experienced them. These results provide an empirical basis for identifying young people to receive a preventive intervention.
