What is it about?
In this paper, I report on a two-part qualitative study completed with the "Great Lakes Institute", a highly regarded teacher leadership development program. Drawing upon study results, I argue that leadership identity development is foundational to one's development as a teacher leader.

Why is it important?
Teacher leadership is a popular, even trendy reform strategy. But what do we really know about how to develop teacher leaders for this work? This is the question that drives my current research.
Perspectives
Cynthia Carver is an associate professor in the Department of Organizational Leadership at Oakland University where she studies the policy, preparation, and practice of leadership by teachers and principals. Her research can be found in a variety of journals, including the Journal of Research in Leadership Education, the Journal of Teacher Education, Educational Policy, and Educational Leadership.
