What is it about?

This paper contains an overview of all research on the emotion 'contempt' and the difference with similar emotions, such as anger and disgust. We talk about the characteristics of contempt and how it is often expressed and about the effects of feeling contempt on oneself and on others.

Why is it important?

Contempt is an important emotion because it may predict when people opt out, either in their marriages, or in organisational or political commitment. It is important to prevent that people become contemptuous because it is destructive and irreversible. Contempt can lead to political indifference, populism, break ups of friendships or marriages.

Perspectives

This is the first extensive and elaborate review of all research related on contempt. We define contempt and compare it with related emotions, mostly anger.
