What is it about?

Medication review services are currently funded by public drug plans in most provinces in Canada and in other countries around the world. We have shown that there was rapid and widespread uptake of funded medication reviews (MedsCheck) in Ontario. Medication review delivery was generally consistent with program eligibility, however, there are some findings possibly consistent with delivery to less complex patients. Medication reviews increased over time; however, the number of persons receiving a review more than once was low and a potential missed opportunity.

Why is it important?

There are likely missed opportunities to provide annual medication reviews to people who are taking multiple medications. There may be opportunities to enhance program criteria to reach more vulnerable populations. The findings can help clinicians and policy-makers understand service uptake and gaps to better direct future delivery of services. Also, trends in service utilization over time can help forecast service use and the associated benefits, costs and resultant value to the health care system.

Perspectives

It was helpful to examine the uptake of the MedsCheck medication program in such detail. The data can help inform policy changes that can help ensure the best application of a medication review service in Ontario.
