What is it about?
We aimed to develop a tool requiring minimal literacy to facilitate parent engagement in early intervention. We identified that a picture based tool would engage parents in conversation about routines to help providers understand the child's overall participation in daily activities. Parents and caregivers of children under 3 years of age told us what their children do on a typical day. We used their responses to identify the most frequently reported activities and matched those activities with photographs. A group of experts in early child development and assessment were asked to evaluate the photographs and corresponding activities which resulted in a set of 40 activities/photographs that are included in the Infant Toddler Activity Card Sort.

The Infant Toddler Activity Card Sort provides a validated set of images that can be used by early intervention teams to facilitate goal development and document family-centered outcomes.
Perspectives
I hope this helps readers appreciate the importance of caregiver's perspectives of how their child is functioning within the family routines. Developmental milestones can inform our understanding of a child's capacity, but real-world participation requires integration of skills throughout the day. I anticipate that the Infant Toddler Activity Card Sort can be implemented by early intervention providers to help identify and document important outcomes to the family.
