What is it about?
Management development has a long history in organizations (over 100 years) but the specific idea of "talent management" is much more recent. This article traces the use of "talent" in the management literature in the 20th century culminating in the birth of the idea of "talent management" in the 1990s. The article then explains why organizations adopt talent management drawing on ideas from the fads and fashions literature. Five non-rational, but not irrational, reasons for the adoption of talent management are given.
