What is it about?

Signs that are backlit are easier to read. We have shown that very high brightness should be avoided, instead should be aimed at luminances around 100 cd/m². By doing so wayfinding signs are easy to recognize and easy to read.

Why is it important?

There are no established standards for optimal backlighting of advertisements or wayfinding indications. To provide guidance ensures that user requirements as well as economic and environmental benefits are met.

Perspectives

Ideally LEDs would dim automatically according the light conditions in the surroundings.
