What is it about?

Research on the role of the Approved Mental Health Professional. How they work with service users, psychitarists, police and hospital staff. How AMHPs work across health and social care organisations and in the private domains of peoples' homes who are mentally unwell.

Why is it important?

It is important to understand how individuals are detained under the Mental Health Act. My research shows how AMHPs work and what they consider when they detain a person to a psychiatric hospital. There has been little research on the AMHP role and how it operates in practice. The article also contibutes to literature and research on hybridisation and professionalism.

Perspectives

I hope my article shows people what the AMHP role entails and how through eight nested roles they manage complex mental health presentations. I hope it shows the tensions of working within and across professional and organisational boundaries. I hope it provokes thought and debate.
