What is it about?
Much has been written about photography in the world of anthropology, but little attention has been given to the practice of selfie-taking. This experimental paper employs the practice of Instagram self-portraiture as a methodological tool that allows the researcher to conduct practical ethnographic research into this phenomenon.

Why is it important?
In a world where millions of selfies are uploaded to Instagram every day, an anthropological analysis of the purpose and process of creating these images is a much needed addition to the corpus of scholarly work on social media use.
