What is it about?

This paper examines the disruptive nature of financial innovations available to small firms by the growing range of online platforms that have emerged in the United Kingdom since the financial crisis.

Why is it important?

Unlike previous studies, this article aims to take a consolidating stance at the macroeconomic level, where Alternative Finance is viewed as a new institution, which by means of certain competitive advantages augments existing formal mechanisms of entrepreneurial finance and helps facilitate start-up and small firm growth.

Perspectives

The revealed tendencies - discussed in this paper - fits into the Christensen’s model of structural innovations, and (I hope) contribute to a better understanding of the new mechanisms emerged as a result of the on-going transformations.
