What is it about?

This article presents case studies of the strategies pursued by the Financial Times and The Telegraph in migrating from print to digital. It shows how new conceptions of the news business are being articulated by managements, how production is being reshaped and increasingly driven by data analytics, and poses questions about the impact of these changes on journalistic practices.

Why is it important?

This article tries to capture a moment of transition and to reflect how this is affecting the thinking and the practice of managers attempting to find their way in the digital revolution. So it is about the tensions rather than about how things are ultimately going to be resolved - because we really don't yet know.

Perspectives

News media are changing as the digital revolution continues. Newspapers have a digital presence and sometimes their print existence disappears altogether. This article looks at a moment of change, when two prominent British newspapers were adapting to the technological revolution which is having such far-reaching effects on how we, as audience members, consume the news.
