Women's labour participation is increasing. Protective policies such as paid maternity should be implemented to offset deleterious effects of work on pregnancy. These policies are crucial in low-income countries where adverse birth outcomes are common.

Why is it important?
The duration of paid maternity leave is longer in high-income countries compared to low-income countries. In countries where there is shorter or no paid maternity leave, adverse pregnancy outcomes are common.
