Why is it important?

The number and rates of maternal and neonatal mortalities are considerably high in Nigeria. Health facility-based childbirth is one way of reducing these mortalities. However, with 63% of mothers giving birth to their babies at home, health facility delivery is poorly utilized in the country. While a few studies have examined factors associated with health facility delivery in Nigeria, the within-population variations like the rural-urban differences have not been investigated. The present study aimed at bridging this knowledge gap using a nationally representative dataset.

Perspectives

This study provides evidence-informed knowledge for addressing the challenge of poor/low utilization of health facility for child delivery in rural and urban Nigeria.
