What is it about?

Women on the autism spectrum talk about their experiences of life, education and work. They give examples of their needs and experiences and we look at their plans for the future.

Why is it important?

Most people think autism mainly affects men and boys but there are a significant number of girls and women also on the spectrum. It is important that we understand what the similarities and differences are with men to ensure women get the support and outcomes that they want. This study describes the needs and experiences of autistic adult women in their own words, which was a first for Australia and possibly internationally.

Perspectives

This paper is a sub-section of the data from a large scale national study with autistic adults in Australia. The data is compelling as it is the words of autistic adults themselves and gives us an insight into what is important to them. This study was carried out at the beginning of movement to include more autistic adults in the research process and we were proud of the number of respondents as well as the representation on the research planning group and in the data analysis.
