What is it about?
This paper analyses the relations between economic sectors over a period of 18 years in a region highly dependent on tourism activities (Algarve, in the South of Portugal). Our work includes an analysis of the sectorial impacts of the international crisis started in 2008.

Why is it important?
Our results show how tourism, construction and non-tradable services reinforce each others, with negative implications on the performance of the tradable sector (primary activities and manufacturing). The decline of construction activities after the international crisis of 2008 revealed the lack of regional resilience, with high levels of unemployment being observed since then.
Perspectives
This paper offers a critical view on the concept of "tourism led growth" and reveals the long term negative economic impacts of tourism specialization.
