Why is it important?
Contemporary cities are battlegrounds where divisions of race, gender and sexuality contribute to conflicts produced by increasing poverty and precarious lifestyles. This essay looks at how we develop mental maps of the cities that we inhabit and how this cognitive mapping contributes to how we understand what it means to be human.
