Self-harm appear to be increasing among young women in the western world. This article reports on research conducted with young women to explore their views of self-harm, in particular to understand the differences between suicidal behaviour and non-suicidal self-injury.

Why is it important?
Self-harm is a cause of great concern for the people it affects, including family, friends, school staff, and health professionals. Some research treats suicidal behaviour and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) as very similar. This article points out important differences, and in particular, discusses the importance, for some young women, of NSSI as a coping strategy, helping them to feel better at times of great distress.
