Why is it important?

Our findings support the conclusion that gum chewing shortens the period required for the return of bowel motility after cesarean section and that xylitol-containing gum has at least one benefit over xylitol-free gum. chewing gum may serve as a cheap, effective, and well-tolerated alternative to sham feeding, providing the benefits of gastrointestinal stimulation without the complications associated with feeding. Furthermore, the shortened time to first flatus may be important in alleviating the gas pains experienced by new mothers, which may improve the early parenting experience and decrease the need for pain medication.

Perspectives

We recommend that chewing gum be a part of routine postoperative care for patients post-cesarean section to permit earlier resumption of oral feeding and thus avoid delayed postoperative nutrition and milk production.
