What is it about?

The process of having surgery, from the decision to operate through the recovery period, is complicated and confusing for patients. There is a big opportunity to connect all the steps and streamline this process to make it easier for patients and improve their outcomes. The "Perioperative Surgical Home" is a model designed to emphasize team-based care and put patients first. We describe how we set up our Perioperative Surgical Home at the Veterans Affairs hospital in Palo Alto, California.

Why is it important?

The number of surgical and invasive procedures in the United States continues to increase annually. The costs of care in our country are higher than other developed nations and yet our healthcare system performs the worst in terms of access, equity, efficiency, and outcomes. There is now an emphasis on providing value in healthcare, and this new model for surgical care has the potential to improve health outcomes, decrease costs, and enhance patient experience--the so-called "Triple Aim."

Perspectives

This article shows that physician anesthesiologists are well-equipped to provide leadership in patient care outside the operating room. No healthcare system is perfect, and it is important for physicians to look for opportunities to improve their own systems. My co-authors and I share the belief that changing clinical practice should not take so long, and the emergence of new scientific evidence should drive change.
