What is it about?

Chemotherapy dose-banding is a method of rationalising intravenous cancer drug dosing and supply. The impact of a new system on local practice in the largest treatment centre in Ireland was assessed through pre- and post-implementation surveys of stakeholders.

Why is it important?

The time and cost of preparing intravenous drugs is considerable. More and more people with cancer are being given these drugs and to prepare them individually at the doses that each patient needs is difficult for hospitals. Dose-banding is a simpler method that allows the hospital to use pre-prepared and mass produced preparations of commonly used drugs.

Perspectives

This study showed that all of the hospital staff involved in the use of these anticancer drugs thought the new system was effective and valuable and wanted to see it extended to other drugs. Since we published this, a national system of dose-banding has been introduced in Ireland, influenced by the results of this work.
