What is it about?
Osteoporosis is the most common type of bone disease and it is characterized by low bone mass and loss of bone tissue that may lead to weak and fragile bones. People suffering from osteoporosis have an increased risk of broken bones and fractures. Osteoporosis is difficult to treat and is still incurable, and thus prevention is critically important.

Why is it important?
Osteoporosis is a serious and growing problem faced by thousands of Saudi Arabian citizens each year. Despite the fact that post-menopausal women are considered a high-risk group in terms of osteoporosis, awareness of the disease still remains low. Our study. found majority of the women 94.5% had inadequate knowledge on preventive measures of osteoporosis. More than half of the participants, 132 (66%), had osteo- penia, in which majority, 84 (63.63%), were postmenopausal women. The high prevalence of osteopenia in postmenopausal women indicates the ultimate importance of early intervention to prevent development of osteoporosis in later life.
