What is it about?
The study aims to assess the effectiveness of the current cervical cancer screening tools in western Kazakhstan. Smears taken through liquid-based (LBC, Pap-test “Cell Scan”) and conventional cytology (azur-eosin staining) in the general female population and in women first diagnosed with cervical cancer were collected throughout the western region. Common comparative tests were applied. A total of 494 cytological pairs were collected, including 94 sets provided with histology findings. In the analyzed context it was not possible to prove the LBC “Cell Scan” technique to be superior to its predecessor, azur-eosin staining. These findings highlight the need to modify the current screening programme according to updated international scientific evidence on effective screening design, such as the use of HPV DNA testing with Pap smear triage in women of age≥30 years.

Why is it important?
We expect that the findings presented will contribute to the world database on cervical cancer screening approaches and tools. Quite notable is the fact that we could not find some relevant publications concerning routinely used in our country preservative fluids “Cell Scan” (manufactured by South Korea). Likely, we are the first authors who submitted their data to initiate a discussion on efficiency of the mentioned Pap-test system.
Perspectives
I consider the scientific content of the paper valuable for clinicians, cytologists and Public Health specialists. Hopefully, the article will get a proper audience, including world experts in issues of Cervical cancer. My personal expectations concerning the article are very simple, I would like to get citations as corresponding confirmation of going in right direction. As a specialist, I passionately need professional support in order to run the CaCx screening process in my country properly.
