What is it about?
This paper is a preliminary report about the preparation and properties of a liquid crystal monomer that can be polymerised into a polymer semiconductor with liquid crystal properties (e.g. structure changes over a temperarature range).

Why is it important?
The electrical and optical properties of this sort of polymer can be changed by applying an appropriate heat treatment and/or by applying a magnetic field. This could be a useful feature in processing such polymers for use in organic electronics.
