What is it about?
Trains can carry great loads over long distances. As compared to other modes of transport, they produce lower amounts of greenhouse gases. But train accidents and delays in train services can be a monetary set-back for train operators. These accidents also release smoke that carries harmful gases into the atmosphere. So, it is important to modernize trains to reduce the damage caused to the environment. In this study, the authors looked at the benefits of using modernizing trains by the Canadian Railways. In Canada, trains are being improved with high performance materials, better train designs, and modern technology. These practices have led to a huge reduction in the operational costs and carbon emissions as compared to those in 2017. The authors found that compared to 2004, modernization of trains has helped reduce the amount of carbon dioxide released from derailments by about 6.7 metric tons.

Why is it important?
The impact of climate change on people’s lives is growing every day. Reducing emissions from transportation is one of the key approaches to tackling climate change and its effects. When trains break down or derail, they become less sustainable and may contribute to the release of harmful gases or waste material. In order to rely more on trains to transport goods, they need to be more dependable and ecofriendly. This study shows that using modern trains could not only improve the services they offer, but also benefit the environment. KEY TAKEAWAY: Modernizing of trains in Canada helped the country reduce the costs of operating the railways. It has also helped Canada cut down large amounts of carbon dioxide released from train services. This research relates to the following Sustainable Development Goals: • SDG 13: Climate Action • SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure • SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
