What is it about?

This is a mixed methods study that analyses quantitative trends in the nutrition surveillance system for Lesotho in Southern Africa. Qualitative explanations for the gaps and constraints in the surveillance system are triangulated with the quantitative findings to identify key changes needed in the current nutrition surveillance policy.

Why is it important?

New discourse on the effectiveness of nutrition surveillance policies in sub Saharan countries is needed to avert the high maternal and child mortality rates often underpinned by poor nutrition.

Perspectives

Lesotho has an inconsistent surveillance system, with a number of indicators remaining uncontrolled. Adequate capacitation of offices responsible for national coordination and supportive supervision of key personnel is critical.
