What is it about?

The paper argues that political rhetoric used in convincing others utilises three images by which we conceive of societies, organisations and social systems: the imagery of modernization, the idea of society as a hierarchy, and the social world as comprising competing blocs.

Why is it important?

This paper shows how our understanding of social reality is based on a limited number of root metaphors. Furthermore, the paper shows how actors who want to convince others of appropriate reforms or decisions to take, make use of the metaphors by which people try to come to grips with social reality.

Perspectives

This paper represents a deep constructionist or ethnomethodological view of the social world. Despite the post-linguistic turn approach, the paper is down-to-earth, providing concrete methodological tools for qualitative social research.
