What is it about?

The article is about the key role of learning orientation in the nexus of relationships between niche strategy, network resources, and performance of international new ventures (INVs). More specifically, we examine the mediating role of learning orientation in the relationships of focused international business strategies, resources (e.g., niche orientation and network resources) and multi-dimensional performance (i.e., financial, operational and overall effectiveness performance), by analysing an empirical sample of 147 INVs from New Zealand and Australia.

Why is it important?

The article is important as it examines a key research gap in the International Entrepreneurship (IE) literature on international new ventures and ‘born global’ firms: the role of learning orientation in the interplay of focused international business strategies, resources, and international performance of INVs. We draw key implications for research on INVs’ post-entry behaviour by explicating the role played by the firms’ learning capabilities, and how these capabilities can interact with their strategies and resources in enhancing the post-entry performance of INVs.

Perspectives

I hope that this article sheds new light on a relatively under-researched topic in the intriguing and interesting area of International Entrepreneurship (IE). It was very insightful to obtain a deeper understanding of how learning orientation can function in small, entrepreneurial, and international firms based in New Zealand and Australia.
