What is it about?
This is a letter to the editor in response to two articles by Hiam et al which implied that higher deaths bin 2015 were due to austerity. It would appear that these authors omitted to reference research which may have contradicted their conclusions.

Why is it important?
If austerity was not the cause of the increased deaths in 2015 then we need to establish the exact cause(s). Incorrect assumptions regarding causation can lead to incorrect policies.
