What is it about?
When police officers think someone poses a danger, they can refer the case to a threat assessment service for assessment and guidance. Most cases referred for threat assessment involve domestic violence. Threat assessors commonly use domestic violence risk appraisal tools but it's not known whether these tools are of any use in high risk cases. We tested the ODARA, the SARA-V2, the SARA-V3, and the B-SAFER in 247 threat assessment cases. The ODARA predicted domestic violence recidivism, as did the SARA-V2.

Why is it important?
Threat assessment is very resource-intensive service provided by highly qualified personnel, and it's important to spend time and effort on effective assessments. These results support the use of the ODARA and SARA-V2 to assess risk of domestic violence in threat assessment cases, but other tools were not supported.
