Why is it important?
It is really only since the upheaval created by Solidarnosc in the early 1980s that Poland has begun to notice and to question its connection to Jewish history, to acknowledge the Jewish element in its own history, to wonder about the absence of Jews from modern Polish society, and to wonder what this absence means for a modern Polish culture.
Perspectives
As Poland comes to terms with the new-found freedoms following the collapse of communism, this gap in Polish national identity, culture and history is increasingly apparent. More than fifty years after the event, we are also increasingly aware of this as a loss to European culture.
