What is it about?
Communication, respect, and understanding were core factors for perceiving a relationship as close following the loss of a child. We looked at how 169 women and 116 men from a total of 175 couples viewed their relationship. The parents had a nuanced view of how the loss had developed and strengthened their relationship. Experiencing the tragedy made their relationship very special, with the partner as the only one who could fully understand. They had learned what their relationship could sustain. The importance of talking together, of communicating thoughts and feelings were strongly emphasized. This demanded developing new skills for some, especially for some men. Most parents experienced coming closer, men more than women. Services or programs should help couples sustain open communication to facilitate positive adjustment over time.
