What is it about?

Olanzapine is one of the commonly used medicine in psychiatric practices. It can causes skin related side-effects in some patients. In our patient it caused a serious type of side-effect i.e. skin rash and reactions ovr the sun-exposed parts of the skin. Our hypothesis is N-oxide matabolites of this drug, formed in a minor metabolic pathway of Olanzapine, may contributed to this.

Why is it important?

there is dearth of published literature on such serious skin-related side effects associated with olanzapine.

Perspectives

Though as clinicians we used to observe drug-related side effects frequently, but published literature some times many not explain all such occurrenecs. Hence reporting about such rare but serious side effects is important. It may increase the awareness of fellow doctors about the possibility of such rare side effects
