What is it about?
A new cause of chronic cough has been discovered and cured. A patient with a 15-year chronic cough was found to have a blood vessel encroaching on their vagus nerve. This was causing a "tickling" sensation deep in their throat that did not respond to any standard treatments. They had some improvement with anti-neuralgia medications. They had a complete cure following a surgical procedure that decompressed their vagus nerve. The procedure is called microvascular decompression (MVD) of the vagus nerve. The title VANCOUVER syndrome is an acronym for the name of the condition: vagus associated neurogenic cough due to unilateral vascular encroachment of its root.

Why is it important?
This is the first report in the world of this new cause of chronic cough.
Perspectives
We believe this will be an important discovery because patients with this condition, VANCOUVER syndrome, now have a chance to be cured of their chronic cough.
