What is it about?
Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) are important for personal and public health. But many rural places lack basic WaSH. This includes the village of Alpuyeca in Mexico. Studies have found fecal remains in the water resources used in this village, which can cause several diseases. This study's authors explored the villagers' thoughts, practices, and cultural values related to water. They focused on the need to educate them and involve them in WaSH activities. The authors worked on a participatory action research project and a popular education initiative. They looked at household water management, health effects, and the cultural significance of water. They found that horizontal academic ties, autonomy building, a holistic view, and engagement are important to solve water related health issues.

Why is it important?
The study noted problems related to water faced by the villagers in Alpuyeca. These were irregular water supply, water based diseases, and poor water treatment. Plus, it noted local practices suited to cultural beliefs, which could improve water treatment and cleanliness. This allowed villagers to understand the importance of joint action to solve water issues. The focus on cultural validation empowered them to take ownership of WaSH issues. The solutions given by the authors can help solve problems related to water in an ecofriendly way. They can shape policies for effective and inclusive ways to approach WaSH in other local communities. KEY TAKEAWAY: Mixing local cultural practices with targeted approaches can help solve problems related to water, sanitation, and hygiene in rural communities. This research relates to the following Sustainable Development Goals: • SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being • SDG 4: Quality Education • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
