What is it about?
This paper evaluates the utility of smartphone applications in HPB surgery education. An international survey of HPB surgeons compared smartphone application with other tools such as videos and podcasts, evaluated the pattern of smartphone use, and the role it can play in choosing a fellowship.

Why is it important?
Our findings demonstrated that the role of smartphone application will continue to evolve and grow in HPB surgery education like other surgical specialties. The trainees as well as fully trained surgeons will use it more often in the future for training and keeping upto date.
Perspectives
This was the first study to highlight the need for a smartphone appplications as an educational tool in HPB surgery. In conjunction with different websites, smartphone applications can help to increase access to resources in HPB surgery on a global platform.
