What is it about?

Cooling of Lithium-ion battery of an electric vehicle using the phase change material and the fins. The phase change material absorbs the heat from the battery. The fins help dissipate this heat to the surrounding and maintains the battery temperature in safe limits.

Why is it important?

Overheated Li-ion batteries may cause thermal runaway which may be responsible for significant deterioration in operational life of the battery. In the worst case, the battery may catch fire or even explode.

Perspectives

The present passive cooling technique uses the phase change material and fins. The maximum extension in operational life of the battery is 100.8%. The phase change material is significantly useful especially at higher power input.
