What is it about?
This article examines the rise of police kettling as a public order policing tactic in recent years. On the one hand, this article looks to trace the conditions for its emergence, noting that a logic of containment stands in stark contrast to the logic of dispersal that has ordinarily governed public order policing. On the other hand, this article seeks to examine the why kettling is effective and, by extension, the political implications of its use for human rights and freedom of speech in Western states.
