What is it about?

Government sponsored programmes to joint fund - co-invest - with business angel groups are a new way of increasing the supply of external finance to early stage potential high growth ventures - focusing on the £500,000 to £2m investment range. This early evaluation of a UK government programme designed to co-fund with groups of business angels assesses the application process for businesses and angel investors and the early impacts of the programme in terms of funding additionality - increasing the supply of venture capital in the UK, innovation development, employment generation and sales turnover growth. It provides guidance for programme improvement.

Why is it important?

This is the first paper examining a government co-investment programme with business angels. It contributes to the development of government venture capital theory and policy and provides pointers for future research. The UK Angel Co-investment Fund may be seen as an innovative government venture finance programme which has contributed to the establishment of other similar schemes across the European Union.
