What is it about?

Using data from the Strategic National Arts Alumni Project (SNAAP), I explored U.S. undergraduate music education degree alumni perceptions of their experiences in college and careers post-graduation. Results indicated that respondents were largely satisfied with their collegiate training and subsequent careers. That being said, numerous areas of concern and opportunities for enhancement also surfaced.

Why is it important?

Although faculty efforts to help students develop their artistry seem to be meeting students' needs, several skills gaps exist in other areas. Many of the largest gaps—in areas like persuasive speaking and networking/relationship building—suggest that collaborative work might be a weak area in undergraduate music teacher education.

Perspectives

This project was a rare opportunity to utilize cross-sectional data from a national sample of music education alumni. I hope the findings are enlightening for music teacher educators and music education students alike.
