What is it about?

Despite the support with legislation in Turkey regarding extended autonomy and advance directive, there is no clear provision and sufficient practice on the subject. This study investigated the awareness level about extended autonomy and advance directive in Turkey and assessed doctors and nurses’ attitudes toward patient autonomy.

Why is it important?

In this paper, show that measuring the knowledge and attitudes of doctors and nurses about extended autonomy and advance directive which are intensively discussed in international literature. This is significant because The concept of extended autonomy and the concepts of advance directive, which is its field of application, are quite new in the Turkish literature. On these concepts frequently discussed in recent years it did not find an original work done in Turkey. The study, provided a detailed examination of the concept of extended autonomy in the provision of health services. It has raised awareness on advance directive, which is the field of application of the extended autonomy principle. The study also provided an opportunity to discuss of advance directive in the field of practice.

Perspectives

Writing this article was a great pleasure as it has co-authors with whom I have had long standing collaborations. Advance directive/living will is an issue that touches every single human being on one way or another.
