What is it about?
Adages – aphorisms, proverbs, and assorted folk sayings – are commonly quoted in psychiatric management and psychotherapy. Both clinicians and patients use adages to concisely summarize circumstances, insights, and truisms. In practice, clinicians’ sensitivities to the timing, patient receptivity, circumstances and culture may determine whether declaiming a particular adage will be positively received or come across as a tasteless and potentially harmful platitude.
