What is it about?
Clinicians struggle to form a genuine connection with patients with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Mentalization based treatment (MBT) encourages treaters to be curious about the patient’s emotional experience, even when it conflicts with the therapist’s own views. This interested, not-knowing stance can create trust and positive regard between patient and therapist, allowing the clinician to demonstrate their competence so that the patient will find the perspectives they offer useful and relevant.
