What is it about?

The purpose of this project was to make an educational video to accompany the Clean Sweep session of the OT: Let’s Get Organized program. OT: Let’s Get Organized is a 2 times a week 10-week session group intervention aimed at improving organizational skills for clients with substance abuse and co-occurring psychiatric disorders. The methodology used to guide the video was based on our review of the literature.

Why is it important?

Organizational skills are critical for completing essential everyday tasks across a multitude of areas of occupation such as: ADLs, IADLS, education, work, play, leisure, and social participation. One such skill that is of great importance is the ability to maintain and organize one’s living environment. Having a functional and well-put together living space provides a necessary foundation for fulfilling other occupational roles and tasks, such as financial management and familial obligations. Organizational difficulties can stem from a number of reasons and affect a wide variety of people. Mental illness is often associated with cognitive deficits that negatively impact organizational skills and time management (Revheim & Marcopulos, 2006). For clients with cognitive impairments and co-occurring mental illness, organizational deficits can hinder the recovery process (White, Meade, & Hadar, 2007). Therefore, it is important to address these cognitive deficits in order to improve clients’ abilities to perform critical life tasks. The final product is a 10-minute educational video about how to organize one’s living space. After watching the video, clients will have an enhanced awareness of how to maintain an organized living environment and an opportunity to practice the skills demonstrated in the video which will hopefully improve their ability to successfully participate in meaningful daily activities. Clients can use the strategies demonstrated along with trial and error learning to determine which techniques are effective for them.

Perspectives

Using Clients as Role Models: The subjects who participated in the educational video for the Clean Sweep session are all clients who have previously completed the OT: Let’s Get Organized program, which makes this video a unique learning tool. A critical component of therapeutic groups is peer interaction because clients have the opportunity to learn from each other. Lessons learned from peers, as opposed to group leaders, may be more motivating and inspirational, which can ultimately produce a stronger effect because clients can relate to one another. In this way, clients can learn how to clean and organize their living space from peers who have successfully completed the OT: Let’s Get Organized program and have found the intervention to be beneficial in their daily lives. Lessons learned from the OT: Let’s Get Organized program provide a foundation for a more successful transition into the community
