What is it about?

We wanted to understand which factors are linked with whether a patient receives a minimally adequate dosage of psychotherapy. We focused on behavioral health clinic-level factors, such as the number of staff, and wait times for care in military clinics.

Why is it important?

It is unlikely that patients will benefit from psychotherapy if the dosage of therapy is too small. So, it is important to understand what clinics can do to increase the proportion of patients who receive an adequate dosage of care. We found that the wait time between sessions was the strongest predictor of receiving an adequate dosage of care. This suggests that clinic strategies to free provider time to see patients more often (e.g., weekly sessions), are needed.
