What is it about?

Policies to protect persons with serious mental illness consider institutionalization to be the last resort, to be used only if integrated community-based services are not a viable alternative, yet many individuals with serious mental illness continue to be housed in restrictive, low-quality institutions.

Why is it important?

Our findings indicate that working-age adults with serious mental illness may be inappropriately placed in nursing homes and experience inequitable access to high-quality nursing homes.

Perspectives

A commitment to providing high-quality care to persons with serious mental illness is needed to confront the decades of mistreatment and poor outcomes experienced by this population.
